Breaking Barriers with Music
At the Community String Project (CSP), music is more than an art form—it’s a bridge that connects young people, families, and the community. Through its Youth Orchestra Program and after-school string lessons, CSP gives students from grades 3–8 the chance to learn, perform, and grow together in harmony. Nearly 200 children take part each year, gaining access to quality music instruction and performance experiences that might otherwise be out of reach.
Support from the White Family Foundation helps ensure that cost is never a barrier. The program even provides free supervision and lessons through the Child Opportunity Zone at Colt Andrews and Rockwell Elementary Schools, filling the critical gap between the end of the school day and the start of after-school activities. Modeled after the successful Community MusicWorks approach, CSP stands as a shining example of how the arts can enrich lives, build confidence, and strengthen the fabric of the Newport community.
